iVMS-4200 Change settings on DVR via iVMS 4200?

We have a dvr recorder connected to a wired BT network. Serial Number DS-7208HUHI-K2-P (12157126) We also have remote access via ivMS 4200, however, we can only watch liveview and remote playback on the ivms software. I have watched some videos and they imply that we should be able to change settings ie set up line break alarm directly to the cameras.
The only way we seem to be able to change any settings is via accessing the video directly through a wired connection and that password connection is via joining the dots on the screen.

So my question(s) is:

1. Is the direct access the only way to change settings?
2. If not, then how do I set up iVMS 4200 to be able to change settings?
3. Is iVMS 4200 the correct software to be using and if not which one should we use?
