Is it my PC or the software?

I have what i think are two different versions of the iVMS4200 and the professional version on my laptop and i have mostly been using them for live view and some configuration but on trying to use playback from the NVR it becomes very slow and buggy and usually ends up hanging or just doesn't playback,
Now is this just down to my laptop not being up to it although the desktop does the same but then its a bit old anyway, The laptop is an older HP Elitebook with i5 processor and 8gig of RAM and doesn't get phased by most applications so my question is which is it buggy software or my laptop?

Some more information would help.

What cameras and how many?
What bitrate have you allocated to them?
What size are you recording at [2MP, 4MP, bigger?]
What frame rate are you recording at?
Are you recording continuously or only events?
What codec are you using to compress the video [H264, H265, other?]
Have you ever had smooth playback?
When did you last defragment your hard drive?

Three ColorVu 4mp cameras variable bit rate H.265 2688*1520 continuous,
i only have a problem with the remote playback from the NVR otherwise its fine direct the whole setup is quite new.

Frame rate? Maximum bit rate?

H265 is more demanding than H264. Do you see any improvement if you switch to H264?

Not sure just why that would matter that much when the laptop will cope with 4K playback using on-board trans-coding?
