Hiya

Wondering if anyone is using Axis for people counting? We have a need to determine occupancy using an IP camera and I'm a little confused as Axis seem to sell both(?) a hardware people counter and a software people counter that can only be used with their own brand cameras(?)

If anyone has any experience in this field please get in touch because whilst I'm keen to implement something I would prefer to 'stand on the shoulders of giants' if poss and save a load of heartache along the way if I can! :-) :)

thanks

Hi @daneboomerang

From my limited experience with AXIS' people counting solutions - the People Counter software can do less than the hardware, such as the P8815-2, which has two sensors and can therefore generate a 3D depth map for more reliable people counting in especially busy or "challenging" settings. This will provide you with more information, such as a person's height, direction of movement, allowing you to better understand visitor trends etc.

This video explains the additional benefits of using the P8815-2 - YouTube: AXIS P8815-2 3D People Counter

As you can use the software with single-sensor cameras which don't have hardware specialised for people counting, it will only count people and give a value for this. AXIS' datasheet for the software also states the following limitation - "Objects below approximately 110 cm (43 in) are not counted." - so it may not be suitable if you're hoping to count small children, for example.

For a full explanation of what each offer, it would be asking in the AXIS Support Live Chat, which we have always found to be very helpful.
