Remote access to NVR for optimising the configuration?

Hi

With the help of family member I have installed a new Hikvision IP system in my daughters house as below which is working perfectly but requires some config tweaks like frame rates, WDR, bitrate settings etc. which I can do on the local network through the NVR web GUI as I’ve also got the Virtual Host enabled.

However, as she has not not moved into the property yet and all the config tweaks takes time and trial & error, I was thinking of whether the NVR can be accessed remotely to do all the above config charges via the web gui as it would make it a lot easier for me to do changes remotely.

Any help appreciated.

NVR - DS-7608NI-M2 /8P

4 x 4MP Color Vu Turret cameras - DS-2CD3347G2-LSU

The NVR has the latest firmware installed from the link on this forum.

Thanks

Hi @kmb786

To access the NVRs web GUI from outside the local network you will need to set up port forwarding, instructions for that can be found below:

Hi Dan

Many thanks and will give this a go.

After setting up port forwarding do I need to reboot the router?

Also, once set up, to access externally do I enter http://(isp ip):80 ?

Thanks

I’ve got the port forwarding bit sorted but have the following issue:

Working from my iphone:

1. Port forwarding set up for 554, 8000, 8080 (http)
2. If I leave my Wi-Fi on and use the check port tool then I get a Success and it picks up my isp ip address which is correct and I can log into the NVR by http://ip:8080

3. If I turn off Wi-Fi on my iphone to use my Vodafone provider, the port checking tool gives Error and is picking up my cellular ip address and I cannot access the NVR

So I’m doing something wrong somewhere and would appreciate some further guidance.

Thanks

In the router you forward the three ports (http, server, RTSP) to the NVR internal IP address. It's vital that you do not use DHCP for the NVR IP address, unless you have also set a DHCP reservation in the router. The reason being, if the NVR is rebooted and gets a different IP address assigned, your port forwarding rule will be forwarding the ports to the wrong address.

Port forwarding differs between router models. On some you may have to set up one rule per port, on others you can set up one rule with all three ports, on some BT routers you have to create a custom 'application' containing the three ports, then forward that 'application' to the internal IP address of the NVR. Once forwarded you should be able to access the NVR remotely using http://external_IP_address.

Example: NVR internal IP adress is 192.168.0.100. External IP address of router is 86.29.99.231. With forwarding setup, you should be able to access the NVR using http://86.29.99.231. You must do this from a different network, NOT while connected to WiFi where the NVR is located (that's because some routers block loopback - accessing a device on the LAN, from the LAN, via its external facing IP address)

Using the default ports of 80, 8000 and 554 is not recommended when port forwarding. Anyone typing your external address in a browser will be presented with the login page of your NVR. Change the ports in the NVR to something different - IE 49000 http, 49001 server, 49002 rtsp and forward those. As you've changed the http port from it's default, you'll now need to access the NVR (using the previous example) at http://86.29.99.231:49000 (as the prefix 'http://' assumes the default http port of 80 has been used). For local access you'd also need to add the http port (http://192.168.0.100:49000)

I recently had a potential customer mention that their previous installer could not get remote connection configured with a Vodafone router and they'd thought that perhaps Vodafone were preventing access to certain ports. I'm not sure whether there's anything in that - I've never had any such issues but then I never use the default ports (maybe the other installer was just crap - they never got it working and didn't get paid....)

Finally it's unlikely you have a static external IP address. If your provider is Virgin Media, it'll not change normally as they reserve the address for the MAC of your Hub. For any other provider you'll need to use a Dynamic DNS service such as DYN DNS and set your router up with the details so that it updates the account when it's address changes.

Hi

I understand most of the details on here - it’s just the bit trying to access it but like you says I’ll try it from a different network.

1. My internet provider is BRSK.
2. My router is an Asus RT-AX82U and can setup multiple port forwarding ports - eg. 80, 554, 8000 (or whatever I have set them to in the NVR)

Thanks

One other thing I forgot to mention but it might not apply in your case. Is your Asus router connected to a router provided by you provider (BRSK)?

If so, your internet providers router must be in Modem or Bridge mode as otherwise both the Asus and BRSK router are providing NAT. Double NAT will create issues and may prevent remote connection.

Hi

My Asus router is not connected to my ISP router.

Also, I have been trying to get remote access to work on my own NVR and it has worked in some way. - I.e I can remote access to my NVR and can see/change config setting. However, if I go to the camera management section on NVR and try and access one of the camera through the virtual host, then the http link to the camera does not allow me to access the camera and times out - is it trying to access any other ports that I have not enabled.

I have enabled the http, server and rtsp ports.

Also, I notice that NAT is enable on my NVR network settings - is this correct or should it be disabled.

Thanks

That’s correct. The http link will not work as that link uses the local 192.168 address. It’s easy to get around though. If you port forward ports 65001 to 65008 (or 65016 for 16 channel NVR). That will allow remote access to the camera config. You still won’t be able to use those links but can access camera using http://External_IP_Address:650xx where xx is the camera number (01, 02 etc)

It can be disabled if the router is port forwarded. I’ve noticed that when you enable Hik-Connect in Platform Access; even though Hik-Connect uses P2P and doesn’t require it, it tends to switch itself on.

Many thanks - I will give the above a try and keep you updated.

Hi

Many thanks for the above details. I have tried remote access config on my own NVR and everything works so I can access the NVR and each camera.

As suggested, need to port forward the http, server, rtsp ports AND the local camera ports 65001-65008 (8 port NVR) like JB suggested.

Many thanks
