Hi All,

My question is in regard to POE injectors, I have come across a Phihong POE61W-560DG-S Single Port Power Over Ethernet PoE Injector 56V 1.1A

Not sure why or how I came to have it, however its brand new in a box.

can this be safely used as a standalone for Hikvision POE cameras .

As in say the Hikvision DS-2CD2387G2-L(U) camera,

Or is this for the likes of a PTZ ?

Thank You in Advance

Hi @Nightbadger

Yes, that PoE injector can be used with a standard Hikvision camera like the 2387G2-LU.

Cheers Dan,

In regard to PoE, so am I correct to say that if this PoE injector is say 60w, so when fitted to say the 2387G2-LU. The camera does something called a handshake to determine what voltage is need and therefore the injector reduces or only sends the correct amount or watts to the camera?

What started to get confusing was on a totally different subject, I was reading up about an Ubiquiti Wireless- Access Point which comes with its own PoE injector.

Which on some models have 48V and others are 30w, what also started to get even more confusing is Passive PoE Injector and Active PoE injector.

So does all Ubiquiti gear need to use its own POE injectors to work, and cannot just be plugged into any POE switchers?

Thank You in Advance.

Hi @Nightbadger

Ubiquiti are an unusual one, we have seen lots of issues in the past about them only supporting their own devices or using their own unsupported PoE standards. Because of these problems we have never really invested any time in their products so I don't know if these problems still exist with current Ubiquiti products.

Most of the professional network hardware brands like TP-Link, Netgear, and Zyxel will state in their documentation the correct PoE standards that they use (e.g. IEEE 802.3af [PoE - max. 15.4W], IEEE 802.3at [PoE+ - Max. 30W], etc...).

The documentation I found online for your injector mentions both the af & at standards so via the handshake you describe your injector will be able to provide the correct level of power for your device.

Cheers Dan,
yep I totally agree that Ubiquiti is a strange one in regard to PoE, in regard to wireless access points. I like the Poe type and been ceiling mounted.
Have you any recommendations other than Ubiquiti for a really good wireless AP?
I would like to run a cat6 cable and then plug straight into a PoE switch, without having to have other PoE injectors plugged in.
Thank You in Advance. .

Wireless network hardware is not really our area of expertise, we often point users looking for WiFi hardware to WIFIGEAR as they specialise in this kind of hardware.
